Former EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana has said he is satisfied that the opposition headed by Yulia Tymoshenko is planning to work constructively.

"I’m very happy to hear from you that you have a positive and constructive mood and are ready to work," he said at a meeting with Tymoshenko in Kyiv on Thursday.

Solana noted that Tymoshenko was a patriot, regardless of which post she holds.

"You know what a sincerely friendly attitude I have to Ukraine. In Europe, you have not only many friends of Ukraine, but also a lot of your own friends. I see how wisely you treat the circumstances that you currently have, and you remain, of course, a patriot regardless of the position in which you have found yourself," he said.

Tymoshenko, in turn, expressed hope that the values that the democratic forces have tried to establish in Ukraine in recent years would be strengthened.

She said she hoped that democracy and justice would also be strengthened.

"I devoutly believe that our opposition will protect Ukraine from any attacks on its independence," Tymoshenko said.
