You're reading: Party of Regions: Ukrainian law on Great Famine may be reviewed

The law, which defines the Great Famine of the 1930s as an act of Ukrainian genocide, may be reviewed, Party of Regions member Yulia Novikova told Channel Five on Wednesday night.

"I do not think that we should immediately review Ukrainian laws, but if there is a will of a legislative initiative subject, the parliament may hold debates and make a decision," she said.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) studied facts and concluded that it was "the fight of the Joseph Stalin regime against the class of well-to-do farmers," she noted.

"Our stand should not be one-sided," Novikova said.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych told the Assembly on Wednesday that it would be wrong to define the Great Famine of the 1930s as an act of Ukrainian genocide.

"We think it wrong and unfair to define the Great Famine as an act of genocide of a particular people. It was a common tragedy of the people that once populated the Soviet Union," he said.
