You're reading: Yanukovych’s administration calls claims of alleged secret deals on Transdniestria a provocation

The administration of the Ukrainian president has described as a provocation claims by the Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko (BYT) MP Oleh Bilorus that there are alleged secret agreements reached by the presidents of Ukraine and Russia on Transdniestria's becoming part of Ukraine.

"It’s a provocation, like the rest of provocations from the BYT," Deputy Head of Ukraine’s Presidential Administration Hanna Herman said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine on Wednesday.

She said that the Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko could not bear seeing Ukraine’s real successes in foreign policy and the maintenance of mutually beneficial cooperation between Ukraine and Russia.

"And they are creating provocations, attempting to disrupt the process of stabilization in the state and the process of Ukraine’s emergence from crisis," she said.

Herman said that such claims were evidence of the irresponsible position by the BYT and Bilorus himself.

The Russian press reported on Wednesday, citing Bilorus, that as a result of secret agreements reached between Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, the breakaway Transdniestrian Moldovan Republic may become part of Ukraine, while Moldova could return to the zone of Russia’s influence.

"In fact, the new Ukrainian leadership has adopted a new position with respect to Transdniestria, and in fact, this is the position of Russia. Even despite declarations on the need to secure Moldova’s territorial integrity, Ukraine’s position has changed. It’s not a secret that the neighboring state considers this position to be necessary: take Transdniestria and give us Moldova," he said.
