You're reading: Parliament should regain its lost authority

The Verkhovna Rada should regain its lost authority, first Ukrainian President Leonid Kravchuk announced at a ceremonial meeting of the parliament dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the declaration of Ukraine's state sovereignty.

"The Verkhovna Rada should regain its authority, which was lost due to the lack of principle of some deputies, and declare a war against violations, cynicism, and hypocrisy," he said.

In his opinion, only the Verkhovna Rada can stop attempts to mock the law, the constitution and the parliament.

Kravchuk compared the present Verkhovna Rada to the parliament that adopted the declaration of Ukraine’s independence. He noted that the previous parliament was much different from the existing one.

"The then Verkhovna Rada differed from the present one, as it was an epicenter of political events and it formed the foundation of the state," he said.
