You're reading: Yanukovych: Current constitution should be observed while introducing constitutional amendments

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said that while amending the Constitution of Ukraine, it is necessary to take into account the opinion of the public and observe the current main law.

"I want to note once again that the main criterion for me, when it comes to the improvement of the state’s main law, is the opinion of the public and respect, as well as the unconditional observance of the current constitution," he said, while answering questions from Chinese journalists, the presidential press service reported on Friday.

Yanukovych noted that he had repeatedly said that "the constitution adopted in 1996 meets international standards."

"And everybody recognizes that," he added.

Yanukovych again stressed the need to improve the current constitution, and said that without this it was impossible to conduct administrative reform aimed at strengthening regional government.

"There are recommendations by the Venice Commission and the Council of Europe submitted in 2004-2005. Therefore, we should return to their consideration," Yanukovych said.

"Consensus in parliament and a constitutional majority are required to amend the constitution," he said.
