You're reading: Parliament Speaker: Don’t overdramaticize Tax Code

Speaker of the Ukrainian parliament Volodymyr Lytvyn has said that the adoption of the Tax Code and its unification with the Budget Code are one of the main tasks of the seventh session of the parliament.

"Today, a debate has flared up over the Tax Code, which in fact doesn’t even exist yet. I’m stressing that in fact, it doesn’t exist in a complete form," he said an interview with the Holos Ukrainy (Voice of Ukraine) newspaper, the Web site of the Ukrainian parliament reported.

According to the speaker, there are disagreements between special parliamentary committees and the Cabinet of Ministers.

"I’ve received a letter from a committee head who says there are significant differences between the draft submitted to the cabinet and the text published for public discussion. The question arises: what are we discussing?" Lytvyn said.

At the same time, according to the speaker, these discussions should not be dramatized.

Lytvyn said he hopes that the work already done was useful, "as today it is clear what we should do and, moreover, we have clear joint understanding what the main tax document should be like."

In addition, the speaker said the main task of the parliament is to adopt the national budget for the next year.

"The budget is a mirror of the economic state of the country, a reflection of the policy of the government and prospects of the country," he said.

According to Lytvyn, a realistic budget should be adopted.

As reported, the Ukrainian parliament approved the draft Tax Code only at first reading and ordered that public discussion of the draft should be conducted.

The draft Tax Code, with amendments introduced after first reading, was published on August 3.
