Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, the honorary leader of the Regions Party, has said it is necessary soon to sign a memorandum on cooperation between the Regions Party and the Communist Party of China.

"I am confident that our inter-party ties will become a powerful impetus to the development of the entire range of bilateral relations between Ukraine and China," he said at a meeting with a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Wang Yang, in Kyiv on Tuesday.

Yanukovych said that bilateral inter-party contacts would in future help create a practical mechanism of a high level dialog.

"In order to support the active stage of interaction and the creation of respective legal frameworks, I consider that it will be expedient soon to sign a memorandum on cooperation between the Regions Party and the Communist Party of China," the president said.

Yanukovych noted that such a document could outline the main directions of bilateral contacts at the party level, including the exchange of high-level visits.

He said that he viewed Wang Yang’s visit as the first step in strengthening inter-party relations.

The sides also stressed the importance of the Ukrainian president’s state visit to China. Yanukovych described the visit as "determining and important," the one that opened the way for the revision of bilateral relations at the level of strategic partnership.
