You're reading: Ukrainian mission doubts Ashton’s statement about Ukraine

Head of Ukraine's Mission to the EU Kostiantyn Yeliseyev has said he doubts the veracity of a statement by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, which was published by some media, about Ukraine's alleged reluctance to join the European Union.

"We doubt that this statement could have been made by such an experienced politician as Ashton, first and foremost, because nobody [apart from Ukraine] decides on Ukraine’s strategic development. Ukraine long ago independently decided that there was no alternative to its course towards integration into the EU as a state development priority," Yeliseyev said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine in Brussels, while commenting at the requests of the agency on reports published in some media.

This issue was also raised during a conversation with EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule who said he was ready to check the veracity of these statements with Ashton personally.

Ashton has since said she was misquoted by some Ukrainian media.
