Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said that a further update of the Constitution of Ukraine will not be done for the sake of any political party or bloc.

"The current challenges oblige us to make further amendments to the constitution … We are not creating this document [on constitutional amendments] under the pressure of the current political situation or in favor of any political force," he said at a nationwide meeting of legal workers to mark the upcoming Lawyer’s Day in Kyiv on Tuesday.

Yanukovych noted that the result of constitutional reform should be a document that will protect the rights of all Ukrainians and provide a mechanism for turning the Ukrainian state into a "truly democratic society."

He said that the country’s main law should ensure an effective system of public administration.

"The constitutional process should not be politicized. It should unite all strata of society," he said.
