The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, has voted down the resolution suggesting Ukraine submitting its application for membership of the European Union.

A total of 61 out of 302 parliament members registered for voting supported at first reading a relevant resolution drafted by parliament member Mykola Katerynchuk of the Our Ukraine-People’s Self-Defense faction.

The author of the draft resolution proposed that the president be obliged to arrange for Ukraine’s applying for EU membership within timeframes drawn up by the Foreign Ministry and the EU.

In addition, the document states that obtaining membership of the EU is a priority goal of Ukraine’s foreign policy.
