Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn has said his further stay on the post will guarantee the stable functioning of the Ukrainian parliament.
He gave his opinion during a political talk show on the Inter television channel on Friday evening.
"I do not think this would be exaggeration to say that my stay on the post of the Verkhovna Rada chairman is the guarantee of work of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine," said Volodymyr Lytvyn.
He said he did not feel his position on the post as being shaky."If they feel that you are clutching at your post that you are trying to please all and to be good for all, they will eat you the following day and there will be no you," he added.
The speaker said he deemed one of the election slogans of his party "Country Needs Lytvyn" as being very vital."The country needs him even more [after the reinstatement of the Constitution of Ukraine in the wording of 1996]," said Volodymyr Lytvyn in response to a question whether the slogan is still vital after the constitutional reform of 2004.
The speaker said the Verkhovna Rada needs a person capable of finding a consensus with all political forces and bearing responsibility for the occurrences in the parliament.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine elected Volodymyr Lytvyn the chairman on 9 December 2008.
Volodymyr Lytvyn was the speaker of the parliament of Ukraine of the fourth convocation in the 2002-2006 period.
