You're reading: Tymoshenko awaits Venice Commission opinions on new laws

Batkivschyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko has said she hopes that the Venice Commission will declare the Ukrainian Constitutional Court's decision to repeal the political reform of 2004 as illegal.

She announced this on Channel 5 late on Sunday.

"I believe that the Venice Commission will say that this [decision by the Constitutional Court] is unacceptable and goes beyond the traditional law," Tymoshenko said.

She said that this week the Venice Commission would consider judicial reform in Ukraine and the "issue of the legality of the Constitutional Court’s actions."

Tymoshenko expressed hope that after the Venice Commission’s decision all of the constitutional amendments made after the Constitutional Court’s ruling would be put to the vote in parliament.

She also noted that it was impossible to amend the constitution without conducting a referendum.
