You're reading: Azarov: Fleet’s presence in Ukraine does not influence Ukrainian policy

Brussels, Oct. 14 (Interfax-Ukraine) - The impact of the Russian Black Sea Fleet's presence in Crimea on Ukraine's domestic and foreign policy may be described as "vanishing, small and none," Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said.

"What influence does the base have on our policy? Vanishing, small, none," Azarov said at an international conference at the European Parliament in Brussels on Thursday.

"The influence could be likened to the influence Gibraltar [has on Spain]. Gibraltar has no impact on Spain’s policies," he said.

He noted, however, that the Ukrainian leadership is independent in decision-making and does not consult with its Russian colleagues on any issues.

Neither the Russian president, nor the prime minister has ever called or said in talks: "We expect you to take these steps," Azarov said.
