Prime Minister Stephen Harper will visit Ukraine from October 25-26 and will meet with officials in Kyiv and Lviv.

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) welcomed the announcement in a Oct. 20 press release, urging him to promote democratic values and Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic integration.

The last visit by a Canadian Prime Minister was in 1999 by The Right Honourable Jean Chretien and the most recent visit by Canada’s Head of State was in April 2009 by Her Excellency The Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada.

Canadian Prime Minister’s itinerary in Kyiv on Oct. 25

  • 0930 – Harper will lay flowers at the Tomb to the Unknown Soldier at Park Slavy.
  • 0955 – Harper will attend a ceremony to commemorate famine victims
  • 1030 – An official ceremony to welcome Harper at the Presidential Administration
  • 1045 – President Viktor Yanukovych will hold a private meeting with Harper
  • 1130 – Yanukovych and Harper will chair an extended meeting of Ukrainian and Canadian officials
  • 1235 – A ceremony to sign of bilateral documents held at the Presidential Administration
  • 1240 – Yanukovych and Harper will hold a press conference
  • 1645 – Laying flowers at the "Babyn Yar" memorial

Harper is scheduled to travel to Lviv on Oct. 26.
