You're reading: Yanukovych: Ukrainian authorities want democratic elections

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said that the authorities care more about creating proper democratic conditions for the local elections than the result.

"We are interested not so much in the result of the expression of the will of our voters, but more in the way to create [proper] conditions for the people who come on Oct. 31 to polling stations to vote," he said during a conference call with regional governors on Friday.

According to Yanukovych, the ability to hold fair and transparent elections shows the attitude of the authorities to voters and the maturity of the government itself.

The president said that they needed to create adequate conditions not only for holding the elections but also for the tabulation of votes to ensure that this process is transparent and honest.

Yanukovych also said that any pressure on members of election commission was unacceptable.
