You're reading: Update: Azarov insists elections were democratic

Prime Minister of Ukraine and leader of the Regions Party Mykola Azarov has said that agencies of the government registered no violations of electoral laws.

"The hot lines of the Cabinet of Ministers and the Foreign Ministry recorded absolutely no reports," Azarov said at a press conference at the central campaign headquarters of the Regions Party in Kyiv on Sunday.

According to Azarov, the findings of exit polls correspond to the results of public opinion polls conducted a week before the elections.

"On the whole, the findings of exit polls show that people have confidence in the policy of the president, the policy of the Cabinet of Ministers, and the policy of the coalition," he said.

At the same time Azarov said that for the Regions Party the fact of victory or defeat in a particular region was not the most important.

"The most important thing is that the elections were held fairly and democratically," he said.
