You're reading: Parliament passes law to combat illegal migration

The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, has passed a law that strengthens the fight against illegal migration and toughens legal penalties in the sphere of migration.

A total of 289 of the 429 registered in the hall voted for the bill on Jan. 13.

The law stipulates that foreigners and people without citizenship enter Ukraine with current, valid passports. At the same time, such persons will have to receive visas under the determined procedures, or other documents envisaged by the current legislation of Ukraine.

Under the law, "foreign citizens and people without citizenship may not be admitted to Ukraine for the benefit of the security of the state and the protection of civil order, rights and legal interests of citizens of Ukraine and their health, as well as environmental protection."

Ukraine can also refuse a visa to a person without citizenship or a foreigner who intentionally submitted false personal data, or false or damaged documents.

Ukraine can also refuse a visa to a foreigner or a person without citizenship who violated the legislation of Ukraine during his or her previous visit to Ukraine.
