You're reading: Ukrainian World Congress asking Europe to monitor democracy in Ukraine

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) has called on the European Parliament to continue monitoring the level of democracy in Ukraine.

UWC President Eugene Czolij made this appeal in a letter sent to European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek, according to the Web site of the organization.

In the letter, the Ukrainian World Congress expressed support for the statement made by the President of the European Parliament on February 3, 2011 in Brussels that the current trend of criminal prosecution of opposition politicians in Ukraine puts into question the independence of the judiciary and the transparency of the rule of law in Ukraine.

ЭIn the interests of regional stability, the Ukrainian World Congress encourages the European Parliament to continue monitoring the level of democracy in Ukraine," UWC President Czolij said.

The Ukrainian World Congress, established in 1967, is an umbrella organization that coordinates and represents all Ukrainian diaspora organizations in 32 countries. It is based in Toronto, Canada. The ethnic Ukrainian population in the diaspora is estimated at around 20 million people. The UN Economic and Social Council recognized the congress as a non-governmental organization in 2003.
