Luhansk – Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn has said that Ukraine has to and is able to completely provide itself with food faster than within three to five years, as Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has forecasted.

"I think that this can be and has to be done sooner," he said during a press conference in Luhansk on March 1.

According to the speaker, the food issue is being discussed in the world more and more often, and under such conditions Ukraine should analyze how to carry out spring field operations, find a source for their financing and provide them with the necessary equipment and fuel.

Lytvyn said that people have to be informed about how the problem will be resolved and where assets would be obtained from. He also added that "a lot is being done, but today the authorities have absolutely failed in the information space and today they have to justify themselves and explain everything."

As reported, the press service of the Ukrainian government reported that during his working visit to scientific establishments of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences on March 1, Azarov said that Ukraine would be able to completely provide itself with domestically produced food in some three to five years.

"Systematic work over three to five, maybe seven, years will resolve a lot of serious problems. First of all, the provision of Ukraine with its own food products: cereals, meat, milk and fruit," the premier said. According to him, huge funding, along with proper organization supported by serious work, is needed for this.
