You're reading: Tarasiuk: Ukrainian government surrendering national interests to please Moscow

The current Ukrainian authorities led by Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych are surrendering the strategic interests of Ukraine, according to Borys Tarasiuk, the leader of the People's Movement of Ukraine (Rukh), Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense MP and head of the parliamentary committee on European integration.

"That which the current power calls the normalization of the Ukrainian-Russian relations cannot be called anything other that the surrendering of the national strategic interests of Ukraine to please the Kremlin,: the MP said at the presentation of an analytical report entitled "The Perception of Russia in Ukraine, Romania and the Republic of Moldova," in Kyiv on Friday.

Tarasiuk pointed to the Kharkiv accords, the unification of leading sectors of the Ukrainian industry, events in the humanitarian sphere, as well as "attempts by Russia to deprive Ukraine of active participation in gas deliveries to Europe."

"In the last year, we have observed everywhere Russia attacking the strategic interests of Ukraine," the politician said.

According to him, at present many people are talking about the normalization of relations between Ukraine and Russia, and that the five previous years brought nothing positive in the sphere of the development of cooperation with Russia. At the same time, Tarasiuk added that in the five previous years economic cooperation between the countries was constantly developing.
