Tomenko calls for inquiry into closure of newspaper Hazeta Po-Kyivsky

Deputy Verkhovna Rada Chairman Mykola Tomenko has called on the committee for freedom of speech and information to hold an inquiry into the closure of the Hazeta Po-Kyivsky newspaper.

"I called on Andriy Shevchenko [the head of the committee for freedom of speech and information, and an MP from the BYT faction] to urgently study the situation that occurred at the Hazeta Po-Kyivsky newspaper, which according to the information we have, stopped publishing for political reasons, as its owners believed it improperly covered the government," Tomenko said at a briefing on Tuesday.

"I as the author of the law on censorship believe: censorship is not only pressure being applied from the government, but pressure applied by owners, and that's why I will be call on the committee to tomorrow [on March 16] at a committee meeting, urgently consider and invite representatives of the employees, the journalists of the Hazeta Po-Kyivsky newspaper, to discuss the situation that occurred, and say why the newspaper has closed," Tomenko said.
