The European Union has denounced the violent disruption of peaceful events organized on May 19-21 in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv in connection with the country's first ever pride parade involving hundreds of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) activists. In statement on Thursday, EU Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton voiced her deep concerns over the violence unleashed by a group of ultra-conservative youths during the "Kyiv Pride." Ukraine’s parliamentary speaker has cancelled Friday’s session after the row over use of the Russian language rumbled on for a second day. Thursday’s session ended in blows after fights broke out between politicians who want to preserve Ukrainian and those who favour Russian being recognised as an official language. Outside the parliament in Kiev, Ukrainian-language activists protested to keep the Russian-language bill from becoming law – which would make it equal to Ukrainian in 13 out of 27 regions. The speaker of Ukraine’s Parliament on Friday suggested disbanding the chamber and calling new elections after a debate over adopting Russian as the official second language in some parts of Ukraine broke down into a sweaty brawl. On Thursday evening, parliamentarians tumbled over their desks in the Supreme Council chamber and traded punches, tore clothing and choked one another, to applause and catcalls from reporters and observers in the balconies.
