Financial Times: Video casts shadow on Tymoshenko’s case According to a Financial Times report, “Ukraine is awash with claim and counterclaim concerning what is alleged to be leaked videotape apparently showing jailed opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko moving nimbly in her cell, despite claiming to be severely ill, and in a romantic embrace with her lawyer.”

“The low-resolution clip was broadcast on national television hours after the former prime minister declared a hunger strike claiming she had been beaten by prison guards,” according to the report.

Tymoshenko’s camp has declared the tape a fake designed to blacken her reputation. But a senior prison official insists it is genuine.

Gawker: How American men are using the Russian Facebook to find brides A few weeks ago, I created a profile and logged onto VKontakte, the most popular Russian-language social network. I entered some personal information, uploaded an especially flattering picture of myself, then used the search function to find all single women between 25 and 35 in Ukraine who were online at the moment — around 7:30 p.m. Ukraine time. There were more than 10,000 available, all sorted by a rating system which seemed to be directly proportional to the amount of pictures a woman had posted of herself in a string bikini, and how good she looked in said bikini.

Journal of Turkish Weekly: Ukraine is governed by oligarchs, their assets should be frozen Deputies of the European Parliament claim that Ukraine is governed by oligarchs, and according to them, it prevents the country from developing.
This issue was raised during the debates on the current situation in Ukraine and Yulia Tymoshenko’s case at European Parliament on May 22.

Thus, EP deputy Michael Gahler, from a group of national parties in Germany, reminded that President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych together with his family and friends are getting more and more power.

Spiegel Online: All Eyes Are on Ukraine for European Championship The German national team is playing all of its 2012 European Football Championship group games in Ukraine - two in Lviv and one in Kharkiv. In these cities beyond the borders of the European Union, fans from both Eastern and Western Europe will meet, and the experience could be jarring for some.

If all goes well on June 9, the flight from Düsseldorf will land at 5:05 p.m. in Lviv, Ukraine, a city known in German as Lemberg when it was part of the Habsburg Empire. The group will head directly for the bus without stopping at the baggage claim. These fans will be wearing everything they need for their short trip.

The bus to the stadium travels across cobblestone streets from the imperial period. Farther outside the city, nine-story, Soviet-style buildings line the road. Finally the new arena appears, looking out of place, like some shimmering silver UFO on the side of the road.

Deutsche Welle: EU calls for justice reform in Ukraine The EU sees Yulia Tymoshenko as a victim of political justice in Ukraine. But EU parliamentarians fail to agree on how react. Should they boycott the European football championship?

EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule painted a grim picture of the situation in Ukraine. "Politically motivated justice is a systemic problem in Ukraine," he said. The most prominent, but by far not the only victim of this problem is former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

Tymoshenko is in prison for alleged abuse of power while in office. She went on hunger strike for some time in order to protest against poor conditions in prison. At the EU parliament in Strasbourg, her daughter Yevgenia was present on Tuesday when some MEPs rolled out a banner with a picture of Tymoshenko and the slogan "Freedom for Julia."
