President Yanukovych Calls for Abolition of "Obsolete Soviet-Era Repressive Rules" The President of Ukraine has committed his country to closer ties with the European Union and greater energy security during 2012 in a speech to mark the opening session of Parliament. Alcohol has been involved in most of the deaths blamed on the extreme cold in Ukraine, the country worst affected by the icy temperatures gripping eastern Europe, the country's emergencies minister said Wednesday. Ukraine's emergency situations minister is blaming alcohol for most of the country's weather-related deaths this winter. Besides the debt crisis in the EU, the big pan-European news of late has been the particularly cold and particularly snowy winter in Eastern Europe, which has resulted in "at least 250 people" dead according to CNN, with Ukraine experiencing the most deaths at 135. The death toll from the recent cold snap has risen to more than 260, with the bad weather that wreaked havoc on central and eastern Europe moving west. Poland's Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski will be in Kyiv for talks on Ukraine's EU aspirations today after MPs in the Ukrainian parliament disrupted a speech by President Yanukovych, shouting “Free Yulia Tymoshenko”. Ten MPs belonging to the jailed former prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko's Batkivshchyna party unfurled a banner with her portrait on it, and began chanting for her freedom, as President Viktor Yanukovych made his keynote speech at the beginning of the parliamentary term.
