MAKHACHKALA, Russia (AP) — Two law enforcement officers have been shot and killed in Russia's restive southern province of Dagestan.

Sergei Morozov, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry’s branch in the North Caucasus region, says a police officer was killed early Friday in Dagestan’s provincial capital, Makhachkala. In a separate incident, a prison guard officer was shot and killed on the outskirts of Makhachkala.

Dagestan and other provinces in Russia’s North Caucasus have been destabilized by an Islamic insurgency that has spread across the region following two separatist wars in nearby Chechnya.

Dagestan has emerged as the main base for Islamic militants, who launch near daily attacks on police and other authorities.
