You're reading: Medvedev speaks of need to amend copyright conventions

Cannes - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said that international conventions on copyright protection should be modified to create a more balanced system of protecting the rights of copyright holders and users.

"Everyone realizes that changes in the sphere of regulating copyright are long overdue. One should only have to recognize, muster the courage to recognize that international conventions must be amended," he told the press after the G20 summit in Cannes.

He said that a more balanced system of protecting the rights and interests of copyright holders and users should be developed. "One should not be defending only copyright holders or only users," he said.

Medvedev said that his address to G20 countries "is meant precisely at developing a new system in which copyright holders will be protected but at the same time users will get sufficiently broad rights to freely use the fruit of creative effort," he said. "And the limit of protection would be set by the copyright holder," he said.

Medvedev said that his idea concerning copyright was not left unnoticed at the summit even though "the greatest headache of our colleagues is related to other issues – the euro zone, stability in Greece and also the situation in Italy and Spain." "Because it is clear that Greece is only the weakest point but in reality there are also other countries that are under threat," he said.

He said that he is determined to discuss the issue of copyright with his colleagues because he finds it vitally important for the future.
