MOSCOW - The parliamentary faction of the United Russia Party has issued a statement to protect the constitution, civil peace and democracy in Russia against Orange Revolution-style scenarios.

"Like the overwhelming majority of public organizations and citizens in Russia, the United Russia faction believes that it is vitally important to preserve and strengthen Russia’s statehood, law and order, as well as to update the country’s democratic institutions in order to ensure effective coordination between the authorities and society, the openness of electoral procedures and attention to the interests of different social groups," the document says.

United Russia members stressed that their position matched Russian society’s demands of social stability, honest and open political competition, the protection of citizens’ constitutional rights and freedoms, society’s control over the authorities, as well as a resolute crackdown on corruption.

"There is also a demand to tackle long-term problems and establish real justice in society, as well as a demand for the authorities to respect and listen to their citizens," according to the statement.

Opponents of civil peace in the country are more active than ever, it says.

"Attempting to take advantage of these justified protest sentiments and expecting real changes, this narrow group of people is rejecting any dialogue with opponents and preparing a so-called ‘orange’ street scenario for a change of power in Russia," it says.

"This narrow group frequently acts on direct advice from foreign political strategists, who include key state officials and interfere in our country’s internal affairs, encouraging actions aimed at subverting the existing constitutional system," United Russia said in the statement.

Such a scenario would ruin the country’s statehood and economy, lead to bloodshed and maim the future of millions of people, it said.

The parliamentary majority’s faction also spoke in favor of broad dialogue with all those who are not indifferent to the country’s future, supporting open and honest elections and the observance of civil and political freedoms.

"We call on all constructive political forces, all citizens of Russia to join efforts for the sake of maintaining the territorial integrity and unity of our state, ensuring step-by-step democratic development and countering any attempts of foreign intervention in Russia’s internal affairs," according to the document.
