MOSCOW - A military satellite has been launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome with the use of a Proton-K carrier rocket.

"The launch went smoothly," Col. Alexei Zolotukhin, spokesman for the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces, told Interfax-AVN on Friday.

The launch was controlled by the Aerospace Defense Forces’ ground-based automated control system, he said.

The military satellite is expected to separate from the DM-2 upper stage at 4:27 p.m. Moscow time on March 30.
