You're reading: Madeleine Albright: NATO, Russia must be partners

Moscow, February 11 (Interfax) - Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said six-party talks on the North Korean nuclear issue must resumed as soon as possible, urging Russia to take up the same position with the United States on Iran.

Speaking at the Moscow State Institute of Foreign Relations (MGIMO) on Feb. 11, Albright said Washington’s plans to deploy missiles in Romania stems from its concerns about the situation in Iran and about what the country is doing in connection with its uranium enrichment program.

Hopefully, Russia will join efforts the U.S. has been making in this sphere, she said.

Albright also said six-nation talks on North Korea must be re-launched, where Russia could play a very important role.

Regarding Russian-American relations, she said that the countries’ interests are not identical, but there are problems in which the solution requires cooperation, such as the problem of nuclear terrorism.

Albright said that NATO would never attack Russia and that both sides must be partners and work together.

NATO was very much surprised by Russia’s new military doctrine, in which the military alliance is deemed as one of Russia’s main security threats, she said.

Albright is in Moscow as the head of a special NATO group created to draw up recommendations on the alliance’s new strategic concept.
