Moldovan communists to boycott parliamentary sessions
Mar 10, 2010 at 22:07 | Interfax-Ukraine"Communists are forced to take this measure as a response to the usurpation of power by the ruling Alliance for European Integration, which announced a day earlier the decision to call a referendum on making amendments to the Constitution," member of the Communist faction Vadim Mishin told journalists on Wednesday.
"This decision [on the referendum] contradicts recommendations of the Council of Europe's Venice Commission, current laws and the common sense. We have understood that there is no one to talk with: no one just hears us. We are forced to declare boycott to the current parliament. The Communist faction, which is the largest one, will not take part in its sessions," Mishin said.
"Moldovan Communists will also call a referendum on vote of no confidence in acting Moldovan President Mihai Ghimpu and the current Cabinet of Ministers," he said.
The leaders of the four parties forming the Alliance for European Integration on Tuesday reached an agreement to call a referendum on a proposed new constitution for Moldova. They intend to change the order of electing president and avoid dissolving parliament and calling new parliamentary elections.
The legislature can be disbanded under the law as it proved unable to elect the president late last year. Under the current constitution, the president is to be elected by parliament. The Alliance for European Integration opted for changing the constitution rather than early elections.
