Tashkent, June 18 (Interfax) - Uzbek President Islam Karimov has had a phone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in which the two politicians discussed current clashes between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbeks in Kyrgyzstan, the Uzbekistan National News Agency (UzA) said.

Karimov told Clinton about developments in the violence-stricken regions of Osh and Jalal-Abad in southern Kyrgyzstan and refugee camps in Uzbekistan.

The secretary of state credited Uzbekistan with efficiently accepting refugees from Kyrgyzstan, settling them, giving them medical and humanitarian assistance, and providing them with basic necessities, UzA said.

Karimov and Clinton also exchanged opinions on potential solutions to the crisis.

Clinton assured the Uzbek leader that the current unrest in Kyrgyzstan and the humanitarian problems of refugees and the population of the country’s stricken regions remain high on the U.S. agenda, the agency said.
