A leading member of the opposition Belarusian People's Front (BNF) has been released from jail, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

Syarhey Kavalenka, who was sentenced to 10 days in jail on July 8 for violating court-ordered restrictions on his freedom, was released on July 18 in the northern city of Vitsebsk.

Kavalenka created a scandal in January by putting a white-red-white flag on top of Vitsyebsk’s tallest Christmas tree. For that act, he was charged with “deliberate actions that grossly disturb the public order and show evident contempt of society” under Article 339 of the Criminal Code. On May 14, he was sentenced to a suspended three-year prison term with probation.
