You're reading: Five of 11 forest fires put out in Chukotka

Rescuers and volunteers in Chukotka have put out five of the eleven forest and tundra fires on an area of about 40,500 hectares.

Four other fires have been localized and contained, the Far East regional emergency situations center has reported.

There is no threat of fires spreading to populated areas, oil or gas pipelines, or hazardous facilities and other infrastructure, it said.

Eight personnel and three pieces of equipment were involved in the firefighting effort. Planes have flown two missions to monitor the situation.
