Ukraine insists on the preservation of the border between Ukraine and Russia in the Kerch Strait that existed in Soviet times, but is ready to reach a compromise in economic issues, the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry's information policy department, Oleh Voloshyn, has said.

Voloshyn said that in the former Soviet Union, the border ran through the Kerch Strait and it was marked on the relevant maps.

"Our position in this issue is firm – a border in the Kerch Strait is needed, it will pass eastward of Tuzla Spit Island," Voloshyn said at a briefing in Kyiv on Thursday.

With regard to economic issues, according to the representative of the Ukrainian foreign ministry, Ukraine is ready to discuss these issues with Russia.

"We are ready to reach compromises, we are ready to negotiate on these issues," he said.
