Moldova coalition proposes Nov. 21 snap election
Sep 8, 2010 at 19:00 | ReutersThe four-party Alliance for European Integration has enough votes in the ex-Soviet nation's legislature to have the date approved.
"The ... alliance decided at a meeting on Wednesday that the early parliamentary election will take place on November 21," Marian Lupu, one of the leaders of the Alliance, told Reuters.
The Alliance took power over a year ago after eight years of Communist rule, promising to take Moldova into the mainstream of Europe, but has failed to secure enough parliamentary votes to elect a new president. It tried to change the way the president is elected by holding a referendum on Sept. 5 but turnout was so low that the vote was invalid, making a parliamentary election necessary.
