You're reading: Lukashenko: Disagreements with Russia will be overcome

Minsk, Oct. 20 (Interfax) - Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said that disagreements with Russia will be overcome, and that the Russian media "attack" on Belarus should not be overly exaggerated.

"All this will pass and we will straighten out relations with Russia. But Russia must understand that Belarus is a sovereign and independent state, which will carry on," Lukashenko said in Minsk on Wednesday after talks with Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite.

"The current ‘attack’ on Belarus in the Russian media should not be overly exaggerated," he said in answer to Lithuanian reporters’ questions.

"An information skirmish is going on and some in the Russian leadership are passing judgments. It’s their problems. We have nothing to do with this skirmish," the Belarusian president said.

"I asked our politicians and reporters not to respond to this," Lukashenko said.

For now, economic cooperation and work to enhance citizens’ living standards is more important, he said, adding, "There are no such disagreements from the economic point of view."

"But these petty arguments have had an impact on some projects. Well, if Russia does not want to participate in them, others will, Lithuania, for instance," he said.
