MOSCOW (AP) — Police have clashed with demonstrators who gathered in the center of Moscow to protest the shooting death of a soccer fan.

State news agency RIA Novosti says at least three people were seriously injured in the Saturday disorder on Manezh Square near the Kremlin. Demonstrators threw burning items and tried to break through police lines.

About a thousand demonstrators were protesting the death Monday of Yegor Sviridov, a member of the fan organization for the Spartak team. He was shot in a fight between him and his companions and another group of men.

A suspect arrested in the killing is a native of the Caucasus region Kabardino-Balkaria, fanning ethnic tensions.

News reports say many demonstrators shouted nationalist slogans such as "Russia for Russians."
