You're reading: Russians in Egypt should refrain from traveling to Cairo

The Russian Foreign Ministry has urged all Russians currently in Egypt to avoid traveling to Cairo and other towns where mass protests could be taking place.

"Russian citizens staying in Egypt should remain vigilant and avoid traveling in the near future to Cairo and other towns where protests and demonstrations are possible," the ministry said in a statement posted on its website on Wednesday.

"The mass demonstrations which took place in Cairo and elsewhere in Egypt on January 25 reportedly involved over ten thousand people. Demonstrators demanded better socio-economic conditions, broader political freedoms, including the lifting of the state of emergency, which has been in effect in the country since 1981. Clashes occurred with police which used water cannons and tear gas to suppress the riots. There have been reports about several people being injured," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
