Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski has said that Ukraine could obtain EU membership prospects if it improves its democratic standards.

"Ukraine wants to be associated with the European Union, and, perhaps, in future, it will obtain membership prospects… I would like to express my great and deep conviction that Ukraine has the opportunity to build the conditions for its participation in European integration. This also means better democratic standards in Ukraine itself," he said in Strasbourg on Tuesday, while speaking at the European Parliament in connection with the beginning of Poland’s presidency of the EU Council.

Komorowski told MEPs that he had a "difficult discussion on difficult problems" with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

Komorowski recalled that in late Sept. 2011, Warsaw would host the Eastern Partnership summit that "should lead to a very clear and ambitious political declaration."

"Our partners in Eastern Europe expect a clear signal from our side. We have to tell them what kind of partnership we want to build with them and at what angle we want to be involved in the construction of European aspirations," he said.
