GAUHATI, India — Officials say the death toll from a quake that hit northeast India, Nepal and Tibet has risen to 48 as rescue workers pull more bodies from under the debris of collapsed buildings.

Police chief Jasbir Singh said Monday that 25 people have died in the northeastern Indian state of Sikkim after the 6.9 magnitude quake hit the region Sunday evening.

Another 23 people have been killed in neighboring states as well as in Nepal and Tibet.
