ATHENS, Aug. 23 (Reuters) - An armed man released the hostages he had taken during a bank robbery in Athens' port of Piraeus on Monday and turned himself in, police said.

Three men had stormed into a National Bank of Greece branch on Monday morning. Two were immediately arrested as they tried to flee but the third went back into the bank and took hostages, which he progressively released.

"He has turned himself in, everybody’s fine," said a police official who declined to be named.

Dozens of police had surrounded the bank and a helicopter hovered above the area, which was cordonned off.

The bank robber had earlier fired shots in the air, police said, adding that no one had been wounded.

Another official had said earlier that, according to preliminary information, 14 people were initially held hostage. He still held two capitive before he turned himself in, police said.

Police did not reveal any further details and did not give the man’s identity.
