Two electricians were killed on Wednesday at Ukraine's main national library when they were overcome by gas emitted from a fire extinguishing system that they accidentally activated, police said.

"There was neither blast nor fire [in the Vernadsky library]," the source said.

According to the source, electricians, who started fixing electric wiring, accidentally turned on the fire suppression system, which started releasing gaseous agents to remove oxygen. The two electricians died of suffocation. A third worker was receiving treatment in hospital from the incident which occurred on the 20th floor of the high-rise National Library of Ukraine in the capital Kyiv, Unian news agency said.

Police in Kyiv said the men had been working on an electrical fault at the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine when the fire extinguishing system started up, emitting gas. "There are two dead electricians," a police spokesman told Reuters.
