ALGIERS, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Algeria is to suspend customs duties and value added tax on imports of white sugar until Aug. 31, the government announced on Saturday in response to a wave of riots over rising food prices.

"In order to end the current situation of a partial monopoly on the local market for sugar, the government is implementing from Jan. 1 2011 until Aug. 31 2011 a temporary and exceptional suspension of customs dues and VAT levied on the import of white sugar," the official APS news agency quoted the government as saying in a statement.
