PARIS (AP) — An umbrella group representing newspapers around the world says 66 journalists and media workers were killed last year because of their profession.

The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers said the number was down from 2009, when 99 journalists were killed.

The Paris-based group has rated Mexico and Pakistan as the deadliest countries for journalists, with 10 newspeople killed in each nation in 2010. The group says narcotraffickers in Mexico and insurgents in Pakistan were largely behind the killings.

The association said Wednesday that journalists worldwide are "being targeted for investigating organized crime, drug trafficking, corruption and other crimes."

Another group, Reporters Without Borders, has said 57 journalists were killed in 2010.
