TIRANA, Albania (AP) — Albania's ruling party is urging its supporters to turn out in a show of strength against the opposition, two days after its opponents rallied to call on the government to resign over corruption allegations.

The event on Feb.20 is officially a concert to celebrate the fall of the country’s former Communist regime, but the government is using it as a political rally.

Twenty years ago, at a students’ protest, people removed the six-meter (20-foot) tall monument to the late communist dictator Enver Hoxha from its pedestal in Tirana’s central Skanderbeg Square.

The communist regime formally fell in December 1990 when it declared political pluralism.

The governing party canceled initial plans for a counter-rally last month, after four people were shot dead during an opposition protest.
