Japan's ruling and main opposition parties will discuss a possible tax hike to secure funds necessary for relief work after a devastating earthquake and tsunami hit part of the country on Friday, Liberal Democratic Party President Sadakazu Tanigaki said Sunday.

The secretaries general of the LDP and Prime Minister Naoto Kan’s Democratic Party of Japan will hold talks on such legislation that would enable the government to temporarily raise taxes, Tanigaki said at a press conference after he met with Kan earlier in the day, according to the Kyodo News.
