An Obama presidency

29 October 2008, 21:28 | Editorial, Kyiv Post
An Obama presidency
The U.S. Presidential election means a lot for Ukraine but too bad bilateral relations will take a back seat for more pressing matters on both sides

If the polls are right, and we believe they are, Barack Obama will be the next president of the United States.

What will an Obama presidency mean for Ukraine? Unfortunately, thanks to eight years of reckless leadership by President George W. Bush, not as much as it could.

America will spend the next several years preoccupied with getting its economy on the right track. The Bush “bubble” of incompetence not only burst, it exploded calamitously all over the globe. Moreover, America’s power is not what it once was. America not only became economically weaker under Bush’s leadership, but the nation’s reputation slipped abroad.

Still, the U.S. election matters to Ukraine. The big concern, as usual, is getting an American president who treats Ukraine as an independent strategic ally, not as a minor nation whose interests are secondary to America’s relations with Moscow.

Whoever wins, Ukraine will have a friend in the White House. On balance, however, we believe that the Democratic Obama will be better-suited than Republican John McCain.

On the issue of Ukraine’s bullying neighbor, we agree with McCain’s assessment: “Russia has now become a nation fueled by petro-dollars that has basically become a KGB apparatchik-run government. I looked in Mr. [Vladimir] Putin’s eyes and saw three letters – a K, a G and B.”

But we also believe that McCain would be more likely to alienate Moscow than gain meaningful agreements. We also believe McCain’s preoccupation with Islamic extremism would lead him to turn a blind eye to Moscow’s excesses, in exchange for the Kremlin’s support for America’s war on terror.

The hope is for a U.S. leader who talks tough with the Russians, but also finds ways to work with them without accepting Russia’s absurd claim that Ukraine is part of its “privileged” sphere. Obama seems temperamentally better-suited to this challenge. His popularity across the globe could be used to bolster support for Ukraine’s bid to join NATO and the European Union.

Likewise, he stands a better chance of using his clout to convince the Russians on key issues. The future of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, territorial integrity and other Ukraine-Russia disputes are divides where U.S. involvement can inflame Moscow and prove counter-productive. A cool-headed Obama stands a stronger chance of avoiding such landmines.

There are many ways that Ukraine and the U.S. can improve relations. Unfortunately, we believe both nations are heading into a period in which other priorities will trump bilateral relations. But we also believe that progress can best be made, and needless conflict avoided, by Obama as president.

Barack Hussein Obama is a black sheep, in his hear he is Muslim. His great vision is to create a country only for Black and Muslims. As every great leader, he has all the tools which are needed to succeed: rhetoric skills, great speaker, overwhelming for all people, religious features and more. Hitler also had it - women were crying, people were loving him - like Obama.

Barack Hussein Obama will change the world in its true meaning. As one can read in one of his first ever written article, about the \"Truth of a Nation\", the world is in his view black and muslim. We know now what we have to fear all over the World and not only in Ukraine. A movement, driven by the US, will encourage muslim countries, such as Iran to conquer the World. Weapons and arms will be delivered for a new World Order - change, as we know it. God may bless all of us!

If Obama is not killed by some redneck Yankee hopefully he will put an end to the US policy of aggression and world domination. He will rethink NATO expansion and US missile bases (If they are there to protect Europe then why are the bases not managed by European forces). It is early days but hopefully he will stand independent from the US administration of lies and deceit. Yes he is much more intelligent then George Bush. America needs to stop being the worlds Militsa and fix its own back yard.Look at the financial mess George Bush has left the USA and the world in.It will take more then eight years to recover from the Bush legacy..

Obama wird tendenziell eher den Konsens als den Alleingang suchen. Er, als Nachkriegsgeneration-Politiker, ist frei von alten Mustern des kalten Krieges, wie sie bspw. bei McCain noch pr

Ukraine will loose with Bush a big supporter, although a confrontating one. Obama which also listens to Europe, looks for pluarlism and international organizations. In this sense, there will only be a common position of the USA and Europea about such cases as Ukraine. Therefore, Ukraine cannot expect a lot. NATO joining is not to expect in the near future, EU perspective earliest in 10 years.

Obama will not support Ukraine as it did Bush. Neither he will support them to join NATO and nor it is his buisness to \"let them join the EU\". Russia will cooperate with the USA as long as it his profitable for him. Obama, the one which is looking for peace everywhere, will first sacrifice Ukraine before going to battle with Russia. That is known by the Russians - and that\'s why they like him. Everything else is not realistic.

When being in Berlin, he said: \" We are all Georgians\", but refused to take a clear position as it did McCain. Obama thinks in the big things, with the big player - not with the small ones.

You are so correct! I am an American and I am not for Obama! With Russia\'s growing wealth in the oil industry, this is no time to make \"peace\" with them. My family loves Ukraine and the people of Ukraine and we are saddened that key issues such as NATO membership for Ukraine could be put on hold while we pick up the pieces and try to save our economy.

Wooow! So if the Russians make money with oil, no peace for them? Could you develop this idea?

Before wishing Ukraine to join NATO, you might want the PEOPLE of Ukraine to be in favor of joining.

You don\'t love Ukraine, you love the agressive hateful ideas hidden in the shadows of your narrow mind. But you explained it, you are not for Obama. Self-explanatory.

Maybe you should stop for a second and consider why your country is in this mess. Just a second, and a mirror will be enough.

He has the chance to improve the relations with Russia. He will listen to Europe more than Bush, but will also ask for more support.

Ukraine and other FSU states will have taff times ahead. As Obama wrote in his biography, he is seeking for the equilibrium of power in the world. Small countries, especially in the East of Europe which are near to Russia, will now have to defend themselfs on their own, as Europe only supported them half and the \\\"New America\\\" will not at all in the future. I wish you a lot of force, fellwow friends in the East! May God bless you!

\"The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,
But in ourselves, that we are underlings.\"

Everyone seems to have a blame, except for themselves no matter what country they live in.

I voted for Osama.. hopefully he will plunge the US into such a economic depression we wont know what hiy us. Secondly if the Lefty peacenicks have their way we will have many Beslan situations her in the US. Im all for Socialism as long as it is fairly used, without greed or bribery. Hoprefully after 4 years of Obama the Us will be in a state like Russia was in 1905 orm Germany was in 1929..That is ripe for Revolution. America needs a leader like Gorbachev. Americans need to suffer some of the hardships Ukrainians suffer.. heat shutoffs in winter, water shutoffs in certain areas Americans are nothing but big fat spoiled slobs.. Jerimiah wright was correct... Americas chickens have come back to roost.

The US might stumble from time to time, but it the true beacon of hope and prosperity in the free world. I have spent vast amounts of time abroad and substantial time in Ukraine. A strong US (while clearly not perfect) is the best chance for countries like Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova to continue their sovereignty and independence. I love Ukraine and hope our two countries continue to work together. Of course, Ukraine can opt to ride on Russia\'s coat tails which would reap quick rewards, but long term dependence. Pay now or pay later, freedom isn\'t free.

America has no freedom. With Bush and the patriot acts, the USA is in the meanwhile one of the most undemocratic countries in the Western World. Authorities can do more or less what they want, courts are set off, the rule of law was critically neglected. This will be the first step for the downturn of the USA by the end of the century. As every big power disappears with time, we will see first signs by the mid of this century. The world power by the end of 19th century was Britain, by the end of the 20th USA, by the end of the 21th, probably China - which was already centuries ago.

To be powerful for the long-run, one needs freedom. The basic idea of the founders of the USA, unluckily, they are not existing anymore. Goodbye, USA - and Welcome, China - the next warrior of the East.

I voted for Osama as well

I hope that the biggest unluck happens to America, that later one can attack Osama with a Republican.

After spending 5 weeks in Ukraine over the summer, you are correct we (Americans) are spoiled (not a fat slob in my case however). We are wasteful and take so much for granted. But I have a feeling those days are ending. It will be good for the American people to be humbled. My hope was that we could get back to the principles that the United States was founded on including God. We love the Ukrainian people and it saddens me that due to the poor decisions that our leaders have made, we have gained such poor respect around the world. We, Americans, can\'t all be categorized the same way. We are very diverse people and not all wanted Osama for president because we care about the democracy and freedom of Ukraine. And California Rob has given some wise advice.

You are right, go back to god. A god driven president for eight years was not enough apparently.

I see a big problem with politics in United States. The problem is that they get elected today, and have very little consern for the future. The shortsightnesness of voters allows them to avoid answering some of the more cruisial questions. They borrow a lot of money every year without having a plan to repay the loans. This have been going on for thirty years now. They take out loans in a form of 30 year treasury notes, to pay for their discresionary spending, half of which is going to military. Spending creates jobs in the short run, but the benefits are trivial. Future generations will be stuck with the bill. Currently, no economist can answer a question how US is going to finance the Social Security and Medical benefits in fifteen to thirty years from now and keep a functional capitalist system. It is simply impossible. I think many people realize it, including some of the more economically savy individuals such as Warren Buffet. I think that is the reason that Obama is going to win

What the fucking difference who will be the pres of US?
Guest    (Guest) | 05.11.2008, 14:51
Well, Osama will sell Ukraine to Russia and get some money from him - as well as some friend. That\'s it!
