While being a kid Ponomaryov went in for sports. At the age of 6 he went to boxing section but had to abandon it later because of trauma. After an 8th grade Ponomaryov entered musical school where he received the diploma of conductor -choir-master. Than he continued studying in Kiev musical academy.
The victory in the song contest Chervona Routa in 1993 became for Ponomaryov the first stage of ascent to Ukraine's show-business Olympus.
Later Ponomarev for many times repeatedly won different competitions Singer of year, Star of the stage of the year; Idol of nation.
In 2003 Alexandr Ponomaryov presented Ukraine at Eurovision misic contest. It was first performance of Ukrainian singer at Eurovision.
Ponomaryov is an official performer of the National Anthem of Ukraine.
After the Orange revolution Ponomaryov was rewaded an Order of its honourded participant - "for support of the national spirit".
Married, wife Victoria. Has a son Alexandr.
