Gazprom: Europe losing gas because Ukraine is siphoning

5 January, 22:05 | Interfax-Ukraine
Moscow, January 5 (Interfax) - As much as 60 million cubic meters of gas have been undersupplied to Europe in 24 hours because Ukraine is continuing to siphon off gas from the export gas pipeline, Gazprom spokesman Sergei Kupriyanov said.

"Ukraine is continuing to siphon off Russian gas that Gazprom is shipping to Europe. From 10:00 a.m. January 4 to 10:00 a.m. January 5, Gazprom pumped 303 million cubic meters of gas into the Ukrainian gas transportation system in line with European consumers' orders and an effective contract on gas transit through Ukrainian territory. Only 268 million cubic meters of gas were received at the other end, and 35 million cubic meters of gas disappeared in Ukraine like in a black hole. If you add this amount to 25 million cubic meters undersupplied to the company RosUkrEnergo, then the aggregate shortage in Europe makes 60 million cubic meters," Kupriyanov said.

This would, ordinarily, be a serious accusation. But Russia, like its Soviet predecessors, has never met a piece of disinformation that they didn\'t like. Ukraine has denied Russia\'s accusations, and explained how some of the diverted gas has been used.

So....all you Ukraine-haters (and that\'s really all you are) who are ready to foam at the mouth whenever Mr. Putin or Miller open theirs should try to be a bit more circumspect in your denunciations.

Ukraine has become the Gas Pirates of the black Sea. Its theft of gas does nothing to instill confidence in Ukraine\'s economy. How would Europe feel if it had to pay for 100% of the gas that crosses Russia\'s borders only to discover that the Kyivrus pirates have stolen gas in transit. What message does this send to the world, let alone Ukrainian citizens. State sanctioned theft can not be supported or condoned.

Ukraine diverts gas from transit pipelines only to be able to ship the remainder of the gas to the West. What is called \"stolen\" gas in relaity is used to power natural gas compressors which push the rest of gas to Europe. Without having this so-called \"technical\" gas Ukraine cannot fulfill its transit contract obligations. Arguments about the transit contract (and supply of gas) can go on forever but the reality is that if there is no gas to power gas compressors, gas cannot be pumped through Ukraine.

Is this a common knowledge? Is GazProm aware of it?
Doesn\'t the transit charge covers this expenditure?
Why wouldn\'t Ukraine allow in the independent observers? Reluctance to do so surely points to the idea that someone has something to hide.

Gas is required to charge/pressurize the system. It would not account for the losses of the volume of gas that has been reported.Ukraine is responsible for the costs associated with the transportation and delivery of gas to end points. If it continues to steal that gas (An act of piracy) then yes of course the supplier would need to cut supply to protect their investments. How many retailers would stay in business if the level of shoplifting was so high that they were losing 13 of its stock. You can not claim that 13% of the gas transit was required to pressurize the system.
