European Union proposes sending monitors to measure gas flows

7 January, 14:26 | Interfax-Ukraine
Brussels, January 7 (Interfax-Ukraine) - The European Commission proposed on Wednesday sending observers to Ukraine to measure the flow of natural gas arriving from Russia, Ferran Tarradellas Espuny, Spokesman for Energy in the European Commission said in Brussels on Wednesday.

The commission is ready to do everything that can resume full Russian gas supplies via Ukraine to the European Union. The commission is open to consider sending observers to Ukraine if required and if the parties ask for it, he said.

Hryhoriy Nemyria, Ukraine’s deputy prime minister told the Financial Times that Ms Tymoshenko had suggested to Mr Barroso that the EU immediately send a team of technical experts to monitor Ukraine’s gas pipeline system, including gas metering stations, in order to refute claims by Gazprom that the Ukraine had stolen gas or itself cut off supplies for Europe.

”This proposition was supported by the EU side and shows the openness of Ukraine. We have nothing to hide. We want them to clearly see the facts of what is happening,” Mr Nemyria said.

Gazprom for its part said it had raised supplies to the EU and Turkey via alternative routes through Belarus and across the Black Sea to Turkey although this was still not enough to cover the shortfall from Ukrainian routes. (Financial Times)
